Research for the People: Voices in Palestine Studies, ECPS–Exeter

Thinking Palestine is a collaborative initiative between The Palestine Chronicle and the European Center for Palestine Studies. The project was created to make academic research on Palestine more accessible to a wider public while connecting scholarly work with ongoing journalistic and intellectual discussions.

At its core, Thinking Palestine seeks to build a shared space where academic research, critical analysis, and public discourse intersect. By highlighting the latest research produced by Palestine studies centers, academic programs, and independent scholars, the platform aims to bridge the gap that often exists between academic knowledge and public understanding.

Thinking Palestine builds upon the extensive journalistic and intellectual work of The Palestine Chronicle, an EU-based nonprofit organization dedicated to public education and engagement. Founded in 1999, The Palestine Chronicle has long served as a forum for informed discussion on human rights, national struggles, freedom, democracy, and culture. Through daily news reporting, commentary, features, podcasts, and multimedia content, the publication has cultivated a global readership committed to informed and fact-based discourse on Palestine and the broader Middle East.

The project also draws on the scholarly expertise of the European Center for Palestine Studies (ECPS). Founded in 2009 at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at Exeter University by Professor Ilan Pappé and Dr. Ghada Karmi, ECPS is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the history of Palestine and the Palestine-Israel question. Under the leadership of Professor Ilan Pappé and Dr. Nadia Naser-Najjab, the center promotes collaborative research, supports postgraduate scholarship, and works with scholars and institutions in Palestine and internationally to advance critical academic engagement with Palestine studies.

Importantly, Thinking Palestine is a nonprofit initiative whose purpose is to help create a shared intellectual home for Palestinian research and scholarship. The platform seeks to emphasize the centrality of the Palestinian narrative while challenging the marginalization, fragmentation, and reductionism that often characterize mainstream academic discussions of Palestine.

Thinking Palestine is not an exclusive initiative. The project is designed as an open collaborative platform for universities, research centers, and independent scholars around the world who prioritize serious and historically grounded research on Palestine. By bringing together diverse academic voices, the platform seeks to expand the reach of Palestinian scholarship and connect research communities across institutions and borders.
